Empowering Future Lawyers: How Cardozo School of Law Uses Flo Recruit to Prepare Students for a Changing Job Market
Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, located in the heart of NYC, offers top-tier legal education with strengths in areas like business, IP, and public interest law, supported by expert faculty and a powerful 16,000+ alumni network. With a commitment to hands-on learning, Cardozo prepares students to lead and serve in the legal field. Christina Wells, SVP Operations & People at Flo Recruit spoke with David Adams, Director of Programs and Data at Cardozo School of Law’s Office of Career Services, about Cardozo’s partnership with Flo Recruit which began in November 2020. They also discussed current recruiting trends and how Flo Recruit is helping students stay prepared in today’s fast-moving legal job market.
Q: Can you tell us a little about your role at Cardozo?
David Adams: Officially, I manage programming, data collection, and reporting—covering everything from the ABA and NALP to U.S. News and employment data. I also lead technology initiatives, including our use of Flo Recruit. I help guide decisions around programming, adapt to changing recruiting timelines, and strategize job search support for students. Having been in this space a while, I bring historical context and forward-looking ideas to the table.
Q: Which Flo Recruit Solutions Do You Use?
David Adams: We use interview management at Cardozo for our on-campus interviews. We’ve hosted Research Palooza featuring Flo Recruit. This was a 1L event offering students a chance to see all of the career resources available to them all in one place. Flo Recruit was able to show them how to use interview tools and set up Forward accounts. We’ve also used it to manage events both internally at the law school, as well as working with firms on their events. Additionally, we recommend Flo Forward to our students, particularly when they’re beginning their job search, as it’s a great place to see a wide variety of jobs nationally, as well as firm profiles, and events all in one place.
Q: Where Has Flo Recruit Added Value to Your Programs and Your Students? How has it helped with the changing industry?
David Adams: For 1Ls, using Flo Recruit in job fairs or interviews has been a huge benefit. They're familiar with the platform early, so when we run resume collects or interviews, there’s no learning curve—it just works.
We now introduce Flo Forward as early as orientation. Even students targeting niche practice areas benefit from seeing the broader legal job market. It opens their eyes to opportunities they might not have considered.
Also, the 2L recruiting tracker has been a game changer. It gives students an idea of the bigger picture of recruiting timelines and dates on a broader scale. This helps everyone to understand where the market is at this point.
Q: How has being a law school Forward Partner enabled you to guide your students?
David Adams: It’s a huge advantage to students to be in the Flo Forward ecosystem early on, as it’s really such a great resource, especially with the job search moving earlier and earlier in the season. While we used to talk about 1L jobs in the late fall or winter, we’re now bringing it up at orientation in September. We want them to be educated on the job market and familiar with the best tools, like Flo Forward, from the very start.
Q: You mentioned you creatively use Flo Recruit for mock interviews. Tell us more.
David Adams: Absolutely. We’ve always had a hands-on, custom approach to student appointments, and mock interviews are no exception. To make the experience as realistic as possible, we set up mock interviews as formal events on Flo Recruit, with our counselors listed as interviewers. Students get the same type of confirmation and scheduling notifications they’d receive from firms. It mirrors the real experience, helps them feel prepared, and familiarizes them with a platform they’ll likely encounter during actual interviews.
Q: What advice would you have for law schools considering partnering with Flo Recruit?
David Adams: Don’t hesitate to ask questions—especially if you’re not as tech-savvy. The Flo team is incredibly supportive and will walk you through everything from the basics to more advanced features. Once you’re comfortable, they’re fantastic at helping you think creatively about how to use the platform. Everyone I’ve worked with at Flo has been enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and committed to helping us get the most out of it.
Q: Any final thoughts about your experience with Flo Recruit?
David Adams: We use quite a few different tools, and not all customer service is the same, but Flo Recruit is always top notch. Anyone I speak to, whether it’s about a new, creative idea about how to use Flo for our students, or it’s a colleague chatting with customer support, the level of service is excellent.
David’s insights underscore the importance of adaptability and the right tools in today’s legal recruiting landscape. With platforms like Flo Recruit and Flo Forward, Cardozo Law is helping students navigate the evolving job market with confidence, preparation, and a clear view of what’s ahead.
